Biography

Thomas Renter CRNA

    Mr. Renter was born April of 1957 in Norfolk, Virginia, but lived most of his younger days on Long Island in New York.  In 1977 he joined the U.S. Air Force and worked as a Security Police Bomb Dog Handler at Air Force bases in  Washington State and Korea. He was promoted to SSgt (E-5) and became a supervisor within 3 years.  While on active duty he also became EMT qualified.

    In 1981, he left active duty to return to college at Adelphi University, but remained in the Air Force Reserve and changed his specialty to Aeromedical Evacuation.  As an Aeromedical Evacuation Technician, he provided in-flight medical care to patients and was promoted to Flight Instructor within a year.   He has over 100 hours of actual patient transport and over 500 hours of flying time in the C-141 aircraft.

    Upon graduating with his BSN, he worked for a year as an ICU/CCU nurse on Long Island.  In 1984 he returned to active duty and served as an ICU/CCU nurse at Keesler Air Force Base, a major Air Force medical center.  Patients included all types of ICU/CCU, trauma, post open heart, and pediatric intensive care.  While there, he also completed his Master's Degree in Education.

    He was accepted to anesthesia school in 1990, and upon completing his anesthesia training in 1992 was transferred to MacDill AFB, FL.  While stationed there in 1994, he was deployed to the Guantanamo naval base for Operation Sea Signal.  Along with one anesthesiologist, he was the only CRNA at an Air Transportable Hospital caring for 17,000 Haitian refugees.  In 1996, he was transferred to Shaw AFB, SC, was promoted to Major, and became the Chief of Anesthesia Services.  While at Shaw AFB, he attended the Joint Service Combat Casualty Care Course (C-4) and was invited to return as an instructor.  From 1996-2000 he was a visiting instructor in the Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum course at C-4.  He also completed the ACLS instructor's course.

    In 2000 he returned to MacDill AFB and served as the Chief of Anesthesia Services until his retirement from the Air Force in 2002.  During his 25 year tenure in the Air Force, he received the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal, among others.  He remained at MacDill AFB as a civilian contract CRNA until 2005, when he went into private practice as a locum tenens CRNA and anesthesia consultant.

   Mr. Renter lives in Valrico, FL with his wife Laurie, and children Jessica and Christopher.
